Exploring Bolivia

Bolivia is located in South America and covers an area of 1,098,581 km². It borders Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay and Chile.

The country is divided into 9 departments. The constitutional capital is Sucre and the seat of government is La Paz.

Bolivia has a great variety of climates: cold weather in the highlands, polar temperatures above 5,000 m (16,404 ft), temperate climate between 3,400 and 2,000 m (11,155 – 6,562 ft), and warm tropical weather in the Amazon lowlands.

The official language is Spanish, although native languages such as Aymara, Quechua, and Guaraní are also spoken.

By Air

Bolivia has international airports in:

  • Cochabamba
  • Santa Cruz de la Sierra

The main airports are El Alto International Airport and Viru Viru International Airport.

By Land

La Paz is connected by road to cities such as:

  • Oruro
  • Sucre
  • Potosi
  • Cochabamba
  • Santa Cruz de la Sierra

There are also routes to Copacabana, Tiwanaku and Cusco.

By Bus

La Paz has a main bus terminal with daily national and international departures to Peru and Chile.

By Train

Bolivia has railway connections with Argentina, Chile, and Brazil through the Western and Eastern railway networks.

By River

River transportation is important in the Amazon region and on Lake Titicaca, where navigation routes connect Peru and Bolivia.
